Christoph Niemann (*1970) is an artist, author and animator. His illustrations are frequently featured on the covers of The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine.
Niemann’s oeuvre has been subject to numerous museum retrospectives. He has drawn live from the Venice Art Biennale, the London Olympics, and he sketched the New York City Marathon — while actually running it. For the New Yorker, he created the magazine’s first Augmented Reality Cover and a hand drawn 360° VR animation for the their US Open issue. Clients include Hermés, Google, LAMY, and MoMA.
Niemann has created several site-specific art works in places such as the Waterworks Flatiron Showroom in New York City, the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, the Horst-Janssen-Museum Oldenburg, the Berliner Ensemble Theatre, and the Wannsee subway station in Berlin. He is the author of numerous books, including Sunday Sketching, Abstract City, Pianoforte, The Paper, Hopes and Dreams, ZOO, Souvenir, AWAY and Idea Diary — a collection of humorous drawings depicting the variety of Niemann’s mode of storytelling. His most recent book DRAW invites children and adults alike to explore their own creativity and doodle away. With Jon Huang he created the children’s apps Petting Zoo and CHOMP.
Christoph Niemann’s work is featured in an episode of the Netflix series Abstract. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in 2010.
